How to Adopt

Those of us with Italian Greyhound Rescue know that making an adoption successful involves communication and matchmaking skills.  We are fitting you with a companion, who will live with you for the rest of his or her life, so we take great pride in ensuring the match is right prior to finalizing an adoption.  Many people come to us with a preconceived notion of what is the best Italian Greyhound for them and typically their idea has to do with size and color: "I want a petite little female that is blue".  We think it is fantastic you have thought about an IG to the point you are so excited you have actually visualized what your new IG will look like.  And if we have an IG that meets those parameters and is available, healthy and has the right personality for you, then it's a match!  But think to yourself about what is more important, the color of your new dog or is it healthy?  Its color or its personality?

Last year IGCA Rescue FL adopted out 51 Iggy's with a 100% success rate.  Every single one of the new families was happy with their new IG and considered it a great fit.  Many of those people had specific color, sex, and age requests but ultimately adopted a dog outside some or all of their parameters.  Not because they were pressured, but because when we introduced them to the dog we felt was right for them, they knew in their heart that IG was THE ONE!  Italian Greyhounds each have their own distinct personality as do people, so it is important that the right fit is made.  We want our IGs to go to Forever Homes not Good for Right Now Homes.  And we want you to be 100% happy with your new companion.

To ensure we match the right IG to the right owner we have developed a process:

Step 1
Contact Us
If you already have decided you want an IG e-mail us your application to adopt.  If you have questions, concerns or just want to talk to somebody e-mail us as well.

Step 2
 Reference Check
On your application you included the information for two references.  A volunteer will contact your references to discuss your decision to adopt an IG.

Step 3
The Home Visit
This is the step when an IGCA volunteer will come to your home and meet you and your family in order to get to know you better.  We will look at the areas of your home where your new IG will be allowed to wander and assess those areas for any hazards in order to guide you in creating  a safe environment.  The volunteer may make a suggestion to place an area rug in a 'skid zone' or move a love-seat closer to a wall to lessen the chances of a dangerous 'flying Iggy'.  This is also a great time for you and your family to ask us a ton of questions!  If you have children we recommend that to get your kids involved, you have them write down a list of questions they may have for the volunteer as well!  The volunteer will bring an IG with them that may be their own, a foster, or even a foster we have preselected for you, based on the information you provided.  While the home visit is about making sure an IG is the right breed for you based on your lifestyle, it is also typically an exciting moment in the process.

Step 4
 Placement
This is when you meet your new Italian Greyhound!  Sometimes there may be more than one IG we have preselected for you based upon your specifications.  Once you meet your new IG and decide this is THE ONE for you, we will complete the adoption process.  You will be asked to complete an Adoption Agreement and Financial Release.  The adoption fee will be made by you to our IG Rescue Fund, which pays for the medical bills of the IGs in rescue.  Adoption fees are based on age as follows:

Up to 6 months - $350
7 months to 2 years - $325
3 years to 8 years - $300
Over 8 years - $275

Step 5
 Followup
In this final step we look forward to hearing from you on how everything is working out with your new Iggy.  If you are having any difficulties or have questions on training, contact us and we'll counsel you on how to make the transition a success!
